A Message From President & CEO John Ehrbar
Summer is rapidly approaching, bringing not just beautiful warm weather to Western New York, but also the start of one of the Y’s most impactful programs. Soon, we will be balancing our efforts between serving our members in addition to the thousands of kids in our camp programs across the association.
With the influx of people using our services, we need to strive to help everyone (including our campers and their parents) feel a genuine sense of belonging at the Y. To help us be intentional in our efforts, our membership team has proposed a simple acronym…all you have to do is remember to SMILE!
See members before they see us
Make connections
Initiate conversations
Learn and use names
Express gratitude
Please join me and challenge yourself to create a welcoming environment for all. Sometimes just a little recognition or acknowledgement is all that’s needed to make a huge impact on someone’s life. Thank you for your help in creating positive, lasting change in the communities we serve!

May is Mental Health Awareness Month
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, 20% of adults experience mental illness each year. However, only 46% seek help. The YMCA is committed to raising awareness about mental health, and we are here to fight negative stigmas and provide support to our employees.
As a YMCA employee you have access to free counseling, including crisis counseling, nutrition services, financial services, child care, and legal consultations. Find out more about the Employee Assistance Program and all the resources available to you on our YMCA Employee Resource Page.

Renae Sykes: Independent Health Family YMCA
Renae has worked in the wellness department at the YMCA for over 9 years and is beloved by the community at the Independent Health YMCA. She goes above and beyond building relationships with new and existing members and is a consistent smiling face to open the building five days a week. Renae leads by example when it comes to wellness floor safety and operations and is always willing to support her peers wherever she can. We are all thankful to have Renae’s knowledge, experience, and good energy on our team!
