“The Y is committed to encouraging healthy behaviors and wellness to people across Western New York.” -Sheila Goldberg

Sheila has been a YMCA group fitness instructor for five years, but her YMCA story began long before she became an employee. She first joined the Y family as a member, and enrolled her son in a youth sports league. From there, he took part in YMCA summer camp and spent days off from school in the Y’s Vacation Club. “Working full-time and having these programs available meant knowing my child was being cared for in a caring and safe environment,” says Sheila.

Now a certified Pilates, Barre, and Zumba instructor, Sheila is a familiar and welcoming face at the Independent Health Family Branch YMCA. She also teaches Zumba at Bassett Park in Amherst as part of the YMCA and Independent Health’s Fitness in the Parks program. “Fitness in the Parks in another example of how the Y benefits the community. Providing free fitness classes is a fantastic way to show that the Y is committed to encouraging healthy behaviors and wellness to people across Western New York,” she says. “I love being part of such a great organization!”

Sheila says what she enjoys most about the YMCA is the members, instructors, and staff. “It is truly like a family and everyone is helpful and supportive. Some members have been in my class since day one, and we’ve all become close friends. One of my students even makes me an apple pie every Thanksgiving.”

Sheila says she appreciates the YMCA for being a place for all people, no matter the circumstance. “There is something to do for all ages,” she says. “Having financial aid available for families who otherwise may not be able to afford it is another great way to engage all people in healthy living.”
